There is a struggle that goes on between a page looking good and a page ranking well in the search engines. If you look at the top ranked sites in Google for example, you'll find they are among the ugliest pages you've ever seen.
A top ranking in a large search engine is a prized marketing achievement. The sites at the top have completely abandoned the notion of their site looking good and have gone all out to their sites rank well. We usually shoot for very specific numbers when we optimize a page for a search engine. The items we adjust are Page Title, Sub Titles, Hyper-linked Text, Hidden Comments, Alt Text, and Body Copy. Every element has a range. We can't be too high and we can't be too low. All these items have to be finely tuned (to limits set by our proprietary software) to compete in a hotly contested category.
The other side of the issue is that the site has to look good. We are reluctant to turn an expensive and polished site into the ugly duckling, by adding big ugly titles for example. However, this is what search engines want to see. Our standard policy is to do the best we can to optimize the site without ruining the integrity of the design. If you want us to hit every parameter, regardless of appearance, let us know and we'll put it in.
