Through Web Marketing you are investing in bringing traffic to your site -- more specifically to your domain name. Since everything is based on the domain name you want to insure you won't lose it. Specifically you need to know where your domain name is registered and when it expires.
Unscrupulous domain name dealers lie in wait for domain names to expire. The latest trend is to register domain names and sell them based on the traffic they provide. The time and effort spent to bring traffic becomes a prize for them to sell on the open market.
Don't assume you have rights to your domain name. Past ownership means nothing. If you hold a trademark (and most people don't) to your name you may have some recourse, but even that is questionable. Domain name dealers typically operate outside the country and beyond the reach of the law.
To check the status of your domain name go to NetworkSolutions.com. Click on "Whois." Do a search on your domain name. There are two things you need to verify:
1. Where is the name registered (the registrar)?
2. When does the name expire?
If you are anywhere close to expiring go to the site of the Registrar and make a payment. It's not uncommon to lock your name up for ten years. There is nothing worse than losing your domain name and the traffic that goes with it.
