Web Marketing Article Number 38

Marketing Via Keywords

Keyword prominence is a term used to describe placement of keywords in a title or on a Web page. A higher prominence means the keyword is closer to the top of the page or at the beginning of a title. Keyword prominence is important and the higher the better.

For example, in the Page Title make sure the keyword is first and then followed by a description. If your keyword is "Web Marketing" then the title should read "Web Marketing - Your Key to Internet Success." The important point is to put your keyword first. The page will rank higher.

Then same thing holds true for body copy, ALT tags, and links. You should use your keyword many times. The amount of copy on the page should be sufficient but not extensive - between 200 and 400 words. The keyword should always be as close to the beginning as possible.

It makes sense that Search Engines use prominence as a means to determine what is important on a Web page. Their logic is that important words are mentioned first. Getting keywords onto the page is a good start. Fine-tuning by moving keywords to the top of the page makes the page even better.
